If you’re rack mounting your systems, chances are you’ll want to remove the keyboard to prevent it from dangling about. However, if you do that, the system thinks that you issued a STOP-A and acts accordingly. Question is, how to prevent that?

The answer is the kbd command

kbd [ enable | disable | alternate ]

enable: Enables the STOP-A functionality disable: Disables the STOP-A functionality alternate: Allows keyboard removal but leaves STOP-A working in case you need it. Sounds like this should be the default

Naturally, there’s some patches that need to be installed to get the alternate option working:

  • Solaris 2.6: 105924-10

  • Solaris 2.7: 107589-03
