The version of the boot kernel included with Sun's 5/98 Hardware release of Solaris 2.6, the last version they issued, contains a bug which only surfaces on CPUs running faster than 419MHz. This bug affects both console I/O (doubles keystrokes) and network (kills the link signal on all Ethernet adapters). Solaris 2.5.1 is also affected.
Sun packages a CD called "Solaris Operating Environment" with the faster CPUs. This wraps the installation of the OS with Solaris 7, which does not have the bug. However, it also makes some assumtions about your partitioning scheme (puts swap at slice 1) and is generally cranky and difficult to use.
Since the keyboard doesn't work with the boot kernel, a serial console connection is required. Boot the system headless with the Solaris 2.6 install CD and install as normal.
Next, boot off a Solaris 7 CD with the -s (single-user) option and establish the network by hand, using ifconfig and route.
Mount the root, usr and var filesystems from the installed OS under mount point /a (e. g., "mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a"). Retrieve a recent copy of the Solaris 2.6 kernel patch, 105181. unpack it and apply it with option "-R /a" to apply the patch to the filesystem rooted at /a, i. e., the box's own filesystem.
The result is a fully-functional Solaris 2.6 system.
I hope this proves useful.
Sincerely,
Walter
